I can’t read you…

Belated day number three

Today the topic is things that make me feel uncomfortable. I am sure that if I sit and ponder, I can come up with any number of things that make me uncomfortable, but one that popped into my mind is this: I hate when I cannot “read” someone. I have figured out over the years that I am fairly adept at reading people. I cannot always quantify what I know about them, although once I became aware of how I read people, I also developed more focus in describing (at least to myself) what I understand about them. Prior to understanding this about myself, there were some people that I always felt a little “off kilter” around. It does not even mean that I don’t like or enjoy the person, often times I do like them. I just feel like I can’t relax around them. I have figured out that I use some sort of clues of body language etc, to understand people, and when someone is more “buttoned up”, or less open. I feel on edge.

Not really sure what else to say about this, except that now I at least understand some of my internal discomfort, which makes it easier to deal with.

Let the education begin….

And day number 2!

Today’s topic is to educate people on something you know well. Hard to think of something that I can write about succinctly, and maybe make a bit interesting!

I decided to talk a little bit about baking homemade bread. Nothing fancy, just some basic info. I learned how to bake bread at a fairly young age. My parents went through a phase of baking all,of our bread from scratch. They learned from a book called “The Tassajara Bread Book” by Edward Espe Brown. It is still available!

One of the most basic things is to understand that heat kills yeast. Cold does not, it slows it down, but does not kill it. You can freeze bread, and it will rise after it thaws and warms up. Ere on the side of caution, and use lukewarm water, because water that is too hot will kill the yeast, and your bread will not rise. The method in the Tassajara book is not “quick”, but it is so satisfying, and there is a lot of flexibility in the times that you do the different stages. The bread starts with the sponge, which is the yeast, water, a sweetener and flour. Salt retards yeast growth, so starting without the salt allows the yeast to get established and grow more quickly.

People seem to be afraid of kneading, but to me it is very meditative. He gives lovely instructions with hand drawn illustrations. You do not have to be “perfect”, you want to incorporate the flour into the dough. There are several periods of rising, and he tells you about freezing the dough, and baking it later. There are also many fancier recipes, including a killer cinnamon bun recipe!

Hope this encourages you to try making homemade bread if you’ve never done it!

250 words about me

This is my first post for “Blog every Day in May”. I am excited to try this, although I know I will be playing catch up at some points, I am determined to address every topic!

First off, I have no clue how many words this will be, as I am using the WordPress app on my iPad. Secondly, I won’t have any cute photo, as I could not figure out how to include one from the iPad.

I was born on May 25, 1964. I am the oldest child. My parents had another girl 3 years after me, and then adopted a boy 3 years later. I was born in Baltimore, and we moved to Westminster when I was about a year old. We moved back to the city when before I started 2nd grade. I grew up in a neighborhood I loved, running around with my friends, playing barbies and dress up. We treated the entire street and alleys surrounding as our playground. We rode our bikes and roller skated, played on swing sets and ate dinner at each others homes. We had foster children who lived with our family for various amounts of time, as well as some foreign exchange students. Everyone in our home was treated the same. This is where I formed my ideas of family. It does not have to do with blood, family is who you love. I have been lucky to have plenty of family in my life.

My parents divorced when I was 13, my mom went back to work, and I became responsible for a lot more in our home. After a few years my mom met the man she would marry. He had a son who lived with him, so when my my mom married, he came to live with us. He is the same age as my other brother. My parents adopted another girl after they had been married for a while. So now there are 5 of us. We always had pets growing up, so I love animals too!

I guess that is enough for a start! I’m hoping I can keep up with this, and I’m looking forward to finding some other blogs to follow.

Whole30- completed day 6!

I have managed to make it through 6 days thus far!! I have not “technically” broken any rules, although I know I snack more than I should, and I have possibly eaten a bit more fruit and nuts than perhaps I should. But I figure if it keeps me on track for the short term, I can continue to tweak things for the long term.

Although I have had some killer cravings, and even some dreams where I realized that I was eating something that I should not, the hardest thing has been keeping up with the food prep, not the actual food itself. I knew this would be the case. Although I do cook a fair amount, I also fall into the “pick up take out” trap way more than I should. I just get so tired and don’t feel like cooking. I did some food prep last week, but then partway through the week I was tired of the meatloaf I had made, and did not have enough veggies quickly available! I was very thankful for the salad bar at work, it has a lot of good veggies, and has olive oil and vinegar. Even though it is pricier than bringing from home, I am going to continue with that this week, except I’m going to bring my own oil and vinegar…save a little on weight anyway!

We are smoking meats this weekend, so I will be great this week. We are doing pork, brisket and turkey breast, and a few sausages for Chris. Now I will have a variety of meats, which will help a LOT!! I found a Whole30 compliant bbq sauce recipe, as I love bbq sauce with pork. Brisket I eat plain anyway, and I will take the turkey for with my lunch salads.

I can’t say that I feel hugely different at this point, perhaps the carb cravings are a bit less, maybe I am waking up not quite so sluggish. I have found a love for baked sweet potato with unsweetened coconut milk and some cinnamon!

Whole30 Prep day

I am coming down to the wire on the Whole30 plan! I have not found every sauce that I wanted to find, but I am figuring I can go out on Wednesday to find a couple more things. The rest of today I have the regular stuff, such as laundry for at least the beginning of the week, make the bed etc.

I hard boiled some eggs yesterday, so I am going to make some mayo, and then make deviled eggs today. I am also going to clarify some butter, as I did not find anyplace that sold clarified butter or Ghee. I did not do an exhaustive search, so I may find a source at another time, or it may make sense to just make it, we shall see.

So the rest of the list for today is some veggie chopping and lunch prep for Chris and I. Although he is not doing this, I always give him veggies in his lunch, so might as well do them with mine. I also have a couple recipes that I need to do so I have meals ready for breakfast, lunch and dinner for the next 2 days. I can then regroup on Wednesday! Need to take my before photos and measurements, as well as write down a couple goals. I did go ahead and spring for the email support package, so I’m going to try to follow their plan.

Maybe I’ll get back here with a card post, I have actually completed a couple, although they are CASE’d, so will not work for any challenges. Maybe next week!

Whole30

I am going to give this Whole30 a try! I am nervous about the food prep, as I have problems getting meals on the table on workdays, and I generally do NOT bring lunch. I could probably manage lunch from the salad bar at work, but I’d like to make some things to take, as well as I am definitely going to need to make breakfasts. I also need to have veggies ready to take for work for snacking on the way home. I know the plan tries to get you not to snack, but I also know that the ride home at 6:30 pm can be very hard for me, and I’d rather snack on veggies and a few nuts, rather than fall off the whole plan then.

I am off work tomorrow, so I am going to do a bit more planning and research, and try to do shopping Friday when it will hopefully not be as crowded. I am going to start Monday, the start of the week, and also April 1st!!

I have a few things that I am hoping to gain from this:

1. Less joint pain
2. Decrease or get rid of carpel tunnel symptoms
3. Get rid of cravings for soda.
4. Adjust my appetite so that I can get going down a weight loss path.

I don’t really anticipate finding out that I have any food allergies, or even sensitivities, but who knows?!? I also do not have any pans to go hard core Paleo after this, but who knows, maybe I will love it!

Ocean City MD (or any beach!!) -Favorite Vacation spot

I have never posted for “Show us your life” on Kelly’s Korner since I don’t have kids, and I am not much for “decorating” my house, I often do not have much to post!

But I do go on vacation upon occasion (not at all as often as I would like!!) I really love the beach, but my husband is not very fond of the beach. I prefer places like the Outer Banks of NC, which are not as commercialized as Ocean City MD. O.C. is much closer, so he agreed to go to Ocean City in September after the main “season”. We were able to get a great rate at a hotel. We got a really nice suite, so we could cook lunch. They also had a free buffet breakfast, and a pool for him and it was right on the ocean.

He came down to the ocean the first day, and after that he stayed in the room and practiced his banjo and guitar playing while I was at the beach. I’d come back up for lunch, and then I’d text him when I was ready to come back before dinner and we would meet at the pool and swim for a bit. Then we would clean up and go out to dinner some place nice. We had great weather, and I got some amazing photos.

I found a wonderful shell in the surf. I love shells! DSC_0425

Took tons of seagull shots, I love birds so much! DSC_0389

Got out early for a fabulous sunrise! DSC_0375

But I thought you didn’t have any kids?!

A friend asked me that question the other day, after she saw in one of my posts that I mentioned my daughter moving out. The answer to that question is a little bit complex!

First of all, my husband does have a child from his first marriage. The details of our relationship with her are not really mine to share here. The short story is that we live far apart, and although I have no problems being a step-mom, she does have her own Mom who of course takes priority in her life.

The person who I refer to as “my daughter” (who I shall call Gwen) came to be a member of our family 8 years ago this coming summer. For MANY years, I have had a close relationship with three girls who lived across the street from my apartment, and then up the street from my house. The best description of our relationship is that I am big sister/aunt/friend. Our relationship is a whole other story with many chapters! But it has bearing on this current story in that Gwen was friends with the youngest up the street friend (“Jess”) which is how we met her.

Gwen was staying up the street, as she was no longer able to stay in her home. It was during the summer, and she was between her junior and senior years of high school. Chris and I would take Jess out to dinner occasionally. One evening when we invited her, she said that she could come, except she had a friend staying with her. We told her to bring her friend along. That is how we met Gwen.

While we were eating dinner, Gwen’s tenuous living situation came to light. Her stay with Jess was limited, as Jess’ Dad did not want Gwen to stay permanently. Gwen only had one year of high school left, and she really wanted to graduate. She had previously attended a high school near us for 9th grade, so she really wanted to stay in this area, rather than change schools again. However she could not work to pay rent, and attend high school at the same time; so she had been hoping to stay with Jess, but that was not going to work out.

After we came home, and the girls left, Chris and I talked about the situation. I honestly do not recall who brought up the idea first, but basically we both felt like we had space, and Gwen needed a place to stay, so our path was clear. We wanted to talk to Gwen about our rules, and see if she was comfortable moving in with us. We also wanted to make sure Gwen’s Mom would give us educational and medical guardianship so that we could register her for school and take her for medical care if needed.

I can’t recall if we called them to come back down that night, or if we talked to Gwen the next day, but the decision was made pretty quickly. Gwen moved in, we got her registered for school, took her shopping for some school clothes, got her on our cell phone plan etc.

At some point many months after all this, somehow the subject of how other people looked at our decisions came up in a conversation with Chris, Gwen and I. It was very interesting to compare notes. Both Chris and I had people ask us weren’t we afraid of her stealing from us, or even worse accusing us of some sort of abuse. Gwen had people ask her wasn’t she afraid that we might abuse her, or use her for some illegal “nefarious” purposes. We all said that those type of ideas had never crossed our minds. We just had a “feeling” that this was the “right” thing to do, so we did it. Of course our living situation was not ‘nirvana”; we had some typical teenager angst and behaviors such as skipping school etc. But never have we regretted our decision for a second. Gwen is now a wonderful young woman, and she calls us her adopted parents, and we call her our daughter.

So that is the long answer to the short question! There are many other chapters to this story as well, but I’ll be shocked if anyone has kept reading this far!!

Busy in the Craft room again

I’ve decided to just start spending time in my craft room. Sometimes I do a bit of sorting or organizing. Other times I do a bit of crafting. It makes me happy to spend some time up there, even if it is less time, or things are not “perfect”. It is better then never getting up there at all, as circumstances will never be perfect!

Another thing that I am doing is just jumping in and making some cards. I really love to come up with nice designs, and then crank out a lot of the same card for gifts etc. But it takes me a ton of time to come up with a really good design, so often I do not end up with an actual product for quite some time. So I’m trying a new approach. I’m either blatantly CASEing (“Copy and Share Everything.”), or just lowering my standards a bit. And the final thing…. I’m actually mailing a lot of the cards!!! What a concept!

So here are two more results, significantly less than perfect in my eyes, but I already have the envelopes addressed, so hopefully they will make the recipients happy!
most beautiful day
I wanted to use my new paper from PTI, Dearest Jane . I do like book print, but I cannot bring myself to cut up actual old books!! Anyway, I don’t think either way that I used it turned out great, but that’s life!

And here is the second one.
grateful
Additionally I need to work on my photography set up. (The colors in these photos are not totally accurate.) But again, if I waited to blog till my photos were great, then it would not happen either!

Lastly, here is an example of the state of my craft room…. I KNEW I had a bag of buttons to match the base paper color, and I spent about 10 minutes searching for them. Finally decided to use the ribbon, and then found the buttons right after I sealed the envelopes!! LOL

Papertreyink Make it Monday #106 Two Toned Stamping

I actually had time to participate in this week’s Make it Monday over at Nichole Heady’s PTI blog! I decided to go a different route than flowers because I was straightening things on my desk, and a stamp set that I had not yet used spoke to me!

Here is the Make it Monday post on her blog.

Here is my take on it.
Two color stamping

This challenge worked out great, I made two cards that are the same on the front. I will use one to send to a friend with a small gift, and the other I used the Happy Birthday stamp from the set on the inside, and I will send that one to my sis! Not a particularly complex design, but two more cards to put in the mail, as well as a post for a challenge! I call that a win!!
